St. David enumerates the wonderful effects of the holy and terrible name of Jesus (Ps. 110:9).
It acts like a medicine whose way of acting is unknown and incomprehensible to the patient but whose effect is obvious from the healing produced. For the sake of the name of Jesus used by one who prays, help comes down to him from God, and he is granted the forgiveness of his sins. For this reason holy David, presenting to the gaze of God the forlorn and wretched state of the soul of every man produced by a sinful life, prays in the person of all men for mercy, saying:
Help us, O God, our Savior; and for the glory of Thy name,
O Lord, deliver us; and forgive us our sins for Thy name’s sake (Ps. 78:9).
For the sake of the Lord’s name, our prayer is heard, and we are granted salvation.
On the basis of this conviction again David prays:
Save me, O God, by Thy name,
and judge me by Thy power.
O God, hear my prayer;
attend to the words of my mouth (Ps. 53:3).
